The 8th of March every year is set aside as an International Women’s Day dedicated to uplifting women and honoring their achievements in all spheres of life.
In this regard, The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection also organized a seminar under the theme ‘’ CLIMATE CHANGE, EMPOWERING THE GHANAIAN WOMAN FOR A SUSTAINABLE TOMORROW’’#BREAKTHEBIAS.
The seminar brought all stakeholders working in the Country on women empowerment and uplifting women in all spheres of the Economy and other international partners like:
-
Representative of Global Affairs Canada
-
Representative of EU Delegation, Ghana
-
Resident Representative, UN Country Team
-
Chairperson, Parliament Select Committee on Gender
The seminar was Chaired by the Chairperson of Greater Accra Queen Mother’s Association who asked just one simple question – WHY? She charged all women present to ask their male counterparts why they are not giving them the opportunity to be part of decision making in the house and other public arrears. She is of the view that next year IWD should bring on board to tell them why they still deny women so many opportunities.
The KeyNote Address was delivered by Hon. Lariba Zuweira Abudu – Deputy Minister, Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection.
She thanks all Ghanaian women for the great work they are doing for mother Ghana and those working in the diaspora by raising the flag of Ghana high in their different endeavors.
She said Ghana as a Country is striving hard in bringing women on board as far as women empowerment is concerned. She cites an instance that currently in Ghana’s Parliament, they have 40 women as Members of Parliament which is a good number to boast with but encouraged more women to venture into politics and must be ready to serve in any capacity they are appointed to without fear. She cites an instance of some Bills in Parliament which have been pending for the past years like the Spousal Bill and others which she hope can pass through if they have the numbers in Parliament as women.
She finally encourages the Queen Mothers present to support women who want top contest political positions irrespective of their party affiliations.
PANEL DISCUSSION
For all the participants to have a deeper meaning and clear understanding of the theme, there was a panel discussion with 4 panelists who dissected the theme and participants were allowed to ask questions and answers provided.
This was followed by photo exhibition to climax the 2022 IWD.
